Birmingham: Indian women’s team wins bronze in Commonwealth Games hockey. India won the penalty shootout against New Zealand. The two teams were tied 1-1 at full time. With this, the match went to penalties.

India secured the medal by maintaining a 1-0 lead till the last minute. But at the end of the fourth quarter, New Zealand equalized and the match entered the next stage. New Zealand’s equalizing goal came with only 18 seconds left in the match.

India’s victory was 2-1 in the penalty shootout. Goal keeper Savita Poonia became the pillar of Indian victory with excellent saves. India’s medal success seems to change the sadness of the controversial defeat in the semi-finals.
