Title: Communications Minister Disapproves of Aharon Barak’s Appointment as Judge for Israel at The Hague

Communications Minister Shlomo Karai (Likud) has expressed his disapproval of the appointment of former president of the Supreme Court, Aharon Barak, as the person who will judge on behalf of Israel at the International Court of Justice in The Hague.

In an interview on Radio North 104.5, Karai stated, “I object to this appointment. It is Aharon Barak whose rulings over the years have weakened the deterrence power of the State of Israel in its fight against terrorism that represented us, but as far as I understand, he is not the one claiming on our behalf and I trust the Prime Minister that he made the choice for a justified reason.”

Karai emphasized that the main task for Israel is achieving a complete victory over Hamas, and all other actions are derived from this goal. He also mentioned that Barak was not his and the Prime Minister’s first choice, but other experts they turned to could not represent Israel on trial for all sorts of reasons.

Despite his reservations about the appointment, Karai expressed his trust in the prime minister’s decision, stating, “Maybe there is some kind of brilliance here. I have reservations about the appointment, but I trust the prime minister he chose it. Hamas rose up to destroy us, and we are in an existential war right now.”

Karai also added, “We will return to the war sites to take care of the justice system,” highlighting the focus on achieving victory in the war against Hamas.

The appointment of Barak has sparked controversy and debate within the Israeli government, with many expressing concerns about his past rulings and the potential impact on Israel’s representation at the International Court of Justice in The Hague.
