Salzburg. Sunday’s elections in the city of Salzburg brought along a political earthquake!

The Communist Party of Austria (KPÖ Plus) was the second strongest party here with 21.8 percent (2018: 1.2 percent) of the vote – according to the postless results – and missed the first place by just 2.6 points. The Austrian People’s Party (ÖVP) suffered a heavy defeat in the Salzburg state elections, but in the end it managed to maintain its lead position quite strongly. The second most powerful party was the Freedom Party, which gained significant strength. KPÖ plus, seen as the winner of the election, managed to enter the Landtag with a new, even double-digit percentage, while Neos was pushed out of parliament. SPÖ and the Greens continued to lose blood in another election.

The People’s Party still brought the leadership to the finish line with 24.4 percent (2018: 29.9). But the third-placed FPÖ is not far behind: it rose 4.3 points to 20.2 percent. The SPÖ, long the dominant force in the state capital, could not stop the downward trend and lost 6.3 points to 16.9 percent. The Greens, still the biggest power in the state elections ten years ago, dropped 4.9 points to 11.0 percent and could only take fifth place. NEOS fell to 4.2 percent, a minus 5.0 percentage points.
