After 90 days of a clean-up process in the infrastructure of the Type A Puerto Rico Health Center, located in the Chonta Punta parish of the Tena canton, the population of the area will be able to access health services in a timely manner. In addition, the medical residence of this health home was improved.

The work was delivered on Saturday March 18 to the community by the Zonal Coordination 2 of the Ministry of Public Health (MSP). This first-level care establishment serves 1,756 people who live in 20 communities in the territory.

“I remember that I came here more than 20 years ago to serve as a nursing assistant and we were just a few colleagues who attended to patients here in a small house. Today, there is a team of 14 health professionals and two canoe captains join them. They are transported over the Napo River to form medical care brigades,” says Víctor Solano Bonilla, a retired MSP colleague and resident of Puerto Rico.

“The Ministry of Public Health invested USD 152,206.69 in this project so that free health services are provided with dignity to the inhabitants of this rural sector of the Napo province, who are mostly of Kichwa nationality and low economic resources”, adds Mercy Almeida, coordinator of Zonal 2 – Health.

The Type A Puerto Rico Health Center has a portfolio of services in general medicine, family medicine, nursing, dentistry, pharmacy, admissions, and obstetrics. He currently sees an average of 450 patients a month.

Zone 2 has 90 infrastructure cleaning, maintenance and improvement projects carried out by the health establishments of Napo, Orellana and Pichincha (rural), with an investment of $2,410,315.19 dollars for the benefit of its population.
