On the one hand, the government is trying to increase the record low birth rate, while on the other hand, some companies are not ready to give jobs to pregnant women. According to government media, investigations are going on against more than a dozen companies. These companies are accused of making women apply for jobs take pregnancy tests. If these allegations are found to be true, legal action can be taken against these companies. According to Chinese rules, companies cannot ask women to take pregnancy tests. Also, pregnant women cannot discriminate against workers. According to Chinese government media, companies in Nantong city of eastern province Jiangsu are accused of making women take pregnancy tests. 16 companies in the city had asked 168 women to take pregnancy tests before giving them jobs. An online public litigation group had informed the authorities about the companies in Nantong. On the basis of this complaint, prosecutors had started the investigation. They also visited two major hospitals and a medical examination centre. According to the report, a pregnant woman was denied a job.
