In a surprising turn of events, a 30-year-old man, previously investigated for his connection to the tragic shooting of 12-year-old Adriana outside a McDonald’s in Hallunda, Botkyrka municipality, has applied for compensation following his release. The man was detained between October 5 and November 26, 2021, before the suspicions against him were ultimately dismissed a year later.

The man’s application for compensation has stirred controversy, with the prosecution attempting to prevent him from receiving it. According to reports from news agency Siren, the man’s legal team is now fighting for his right to compensation.

The prosecutor argues that the man’s own behavior played a significant role in his arrest and subsequent detention. Notably, he appeared in a rap video featuring the murder weapon, and his involvement in various encrypted chat apps linked him to other suspects in the case. Two of these suspects were later sentenced to life imprisonment for murder and seven counts of attempted murder. Additionally, the man’s mobile phone contained images of the white Audi involved in the shooting, as well as a note containing a sketched alibi for the crime.

The prosecutor states, “Otherwise, it appears from the investigation that the applicant was associated with criminal circles, as he was repeatedly found with other suspects and convicted persons in the case during police checks.”

Despite the prosecutor’s objections, the Chancellor of Justice has ruled in favor of the man, granting him compensation amounting to SEK 73,000. The decision is based on the belief that the reasons presented by the prosecutor do not provide sufficient grounds to reduce the compensation due to the man’s own actions. The Chancellor of Justice acknowledged the need for cautious application of the reduction rule and deemed the man entitled to compensation for the suffering caused by his wrongful deprivation of liberty.

Three men, Maykil Yokhanna (31), Benjamin Mahdi (24), and Hassan Mohammad (32), were previously sentenced to life imprisonment for the murder of Adriana in April of this year. The prosecutor suspects that the 30-year-old man’s brother is the fourth individual involved in the crime and is currently detained in absentia in Turkey.

The case surrounding the McDonald’s shooting in Hallunda continues to raise questions and captivate public attention as justice unfolds.
