Is the new appointment of Minister of Religions Matan Kahana in the Sderot Religious Council illegal?

Following the publication in Srugim, MK Moshe Arbel (Shas) wrote a letter to Attorney General Mandelblit and State Comptroller Engelman demanding that he disqualify the appointment of Adv.

According to MK Arbel, there is concern about an illegal political affiliation prohibited by law: “Arbiv served as treasurer of the Jewish Home Party while Prime Minister MK Bennett headed it, and is expected to replace the current religious council’s signing license.”

Arbel claims: “Arbiv’s appointment is contrary to the directives of the director general of the Ministry of Religious Affairs, the guidelines for legal advice to the ministry and the customary practice for appointing superiors, and therefore clearly exceeds the reasonableness conferred on a minister when appointing a religious council.”

The claim is that there is a political affiliation between Arbiv and Minister Matan Kahana and therefore the appointment is prohibited by law.

Arbel further states in his application that the appointment was made without the consultation and consent of the head of the local authority, as required by law.

Who is Kahana’s appointment in Sderot?

Yesterday we announced in Srugim that the Minister of Religious Affairs, Matan Kahana, has appointed Adv. Ben Zion Arbiv as the head of the Religious Council in Sderot, as part of his effort to move Shas from the centers of power in religious services and put knitwear there.

For more than a decade, the city’s religious services were controlled by Shas. In 2017, the police recommended that the head of the religious council, Oren Malka, be prosecuted for illegally receiving large sums of money.
