The United States has just announced what could be the toughest and most radical immigration measures in decades and it is related to asylum in the United States at the border.

According to an official statement from the White House, President Joe Biden signed a set of executive actions that prevent illegal immigrants from receiving asylum benefits after crossing the border illegally.

This will completely change the situation for thousands of people who have travelled and who intend to travel to the border to cross it illegally.

Executive actions: no more asylum

President Joe Biden’s first order of business is to ban immigrants who illegally cross the southern border from receiving asylum. The president “issued a ‘proclamation’ under sections 212(f) and 215(a) of the Immigration and Nationality Act suspending the entry of non-citizens who illegally cross the southern border into the United States,” according to the official text.

The decision “is accompanied by an interim final rule from the Departments of Justice and Homeland Security restricting asylum for non-citizens,” the document states.

The rule will be in effect when the southern border is “overwhelmed” and will “make it easier for immigration officials to quickly expel individuals who do not have a legal basis to remain in the United States,” the White House statement said.

The text notes that the measures are not permanent: they will be suspended when the number of migrants can be managed effectively and safely.

In the last four years alone, more than 400,000 Cubans have arrived at the U.S. border, and the number continues to grow by thousands every day, which is why this radical change is worrying for many people.
