The gaming industry experienced a boom during the Corona pandemic. After recently weakening growth dynamics, sales are increasing again – with declining profitability.

The global gaming industry has experienced growth in the first half of this year Sales increased compared to the same period last year. This emerges from an analysis of the 26 largest gaming companies in the world by EY-Parthenon, the strategy consultancy from Ernst & Young, which was available to the German Press Agency.

Accordingly, companies’ sales rose by 9.6 percent in the first six months of this year compared to the first half of 2022 to around 72.7 billion euros. The video game industry appears to be recovering from a dip in growth following the corona pandemic. In 2022, growth was almost five percent compared to the previous year. In 2020, sales grew by 28 percent.

Setback in profitability

“The current industry figures for the gaming industry show light and shadow: sales are increasing more strongly again, but profitability is not yet on the way back to the values we had during the corona pandemic,” said Jens Weber, partner and industry expert at EY-Parthenon, according to the announcement.

However, the profitability of game providers is at a high level, especially compared to other industries, which also makes the companies attractive for investors. “It will be exciting to see how the numbers develop in the upcoming, traditionally strong phases of the industry in autumn and winter with numerous blockbuster games,” said Weber.
