The peace process in Colombia faces a new and delicate challenge following the recent declaration of confrontation between dissident factions of the Central General Staff.

Camilo González Posso, head of the Government delegation at the negotiating table, expressed his deep concern following the announcement of armed clashes between groups led by alias Iván Mordisco and alias Calarcá Córdoba.

The internal division within the ranks of the Central General Staff has deepened. Iván Mordisco, who decided to abandon the dialogue table with the Government, has declared war on the group led by Calarcá Córdobawhich is continuing with the peace process. Faced with this threat of armed conflict, González Posso has categorically rejected violent actions, making an urgent call for peace.

The announcement of this war is an absurd threat against the civilian population“By declaring those who do not align themselves with their ideals as military targets, they are violating International Humanitarian Law and hindering development in the territories. It is necessary that both sides agree to a truce, a bilateral cessation of hostilities, and show mutual respect to protect the civilian population,” González Posso stressed.

The Amazonas Block, under the command of Iván Mordisco, issued a statement on August 21, in which it accused the Calarcá Córdoba fronts of having attacked its fighters.resulting in the death of four members of his group. This document reflects the increase in tensions: “It is painful that they always try to corner us with war, and in these conditions we have no choice but to honor and courage to confront them until we defeat them. For this reason, the units in the area have been ordered to enter into combat with any force that is in the advance to retake the area.”
