The World Health Organization is concerned about the increase in bird flu cases in mammals. This could lead to the virus spreading more easily among people in the future.

China reported its first human death in April from a strain of bird flu, which is widespread in animals but rarely spreads to humans. A 56-year-old woman with several health problems succumbed to the H3N8 strain of the avian flu virus on March 16, after being hospitalized with pneumonia earlier that month, according to the WHO. An initial examination indicated that she had become infected at a live poultry market, where avian flu was subsequently diagnosed.

The avian flu virus normally spreads among birds, but the WHO is seeing an increasing number of cases of the dreaded H5N1 virus, which has decimated poultry and wild birds, among mammals in recent years, which is of concern to the WHO. “Mammals are biologically closer to humans than birds and this raises concerns that the virus may easily adapt to infect humans,” the WHO said.

The organization calls on all countries to cooperate more “to save as many animals as possible and to protect populations”.]
