Increased Concern about Rising Parkinson’s Cases in Fryslân

The parliamentary groups of GrienLinks, PvdA, SP, D66, and PvdD have expressed their concern over the significant increase in the number of Parkinson’s patients in Fryslân. They are calling on the council to collaborate on the creation of a Parkinson’s map specifically for Fryslân. These parties have raised questions on this matter to the council on November 2.

A recent article published by Omrop Fryslân on October 30 highlighted the growing number of Parkinson’s patients in Fryslân. According to the article, the number of Parkinson’s patients has seen a steep rise in recent years, from 1,500 patients in 2010 to 2,600 patients currently. This represents a growth of 58%. Several studies have suggested that substances detrimental to human health, such as particulate matter and heavy metals emitted by industries, significantly increase the risk of developing Parkinson’s. There are also strong indications that people who come into contact with pesticides have an increased likelihood of developing the disease. In France, Parkinson’s has even been classified as an occupational disease for farmers.

Jochem Knol, speaking on behalf of the five concerned parties, stated that neurologists in the country are working on creating a Parkinson’s map. This map is a tool used to gain insights into the correlation between the disease and the environment and identify areas with the highest risk of developing Parkinson’s. Parkinson’s is a severe illness, and the map could help the government implement targeted measures to reduce the risk of developing the disease. With strategic preventive measures, it is hoped that the number of people affected by this debilitating disease will decrease.

The parties are urging the province to actively participate in the development of the Parkinson’s map. They are also requesting that attention be brought to these alarming figures within Seker en Sûn, the collaboration project in Fryslân for care and welfare.

The alarming increase in the number of Parkinson’s patients is cause for concern among these political groups. The development of a Parkinson’s map could prove to be an essential step forward in understanding the disease and implementing effective preventive measures in Fryslân.]
