The electric company has applied for a permit from the municipality in order to be able to place a generator and a 20,000 liter diesel tank near the company’s building in the southern entrances of Haifa. Residents living in the Naot Peres neighborhood express concern that the diesel tank will be placed near residential houses in the neighborhood.
From an inspection we conducted in Hai Pa, it appears that the purpose of the generator (which will be powered by diesel) is to allow the electric company to serve as a backup for the electric company in an emergency.
A resident of the Naot Peres neighborhood, from whose balcony you can see the place where the diesel tank is supposed to be, said to Lahi Fe: “The electric company submitted to the municipality a request for a construction permit for a 20,000-liter diesel tank, in October 2023. We believe that we do not have to use diesel, but there is a solution of energy for a penny, like accumulators that store energy in batteries and can be used when needed. This is cleaner energy,” he says.
“Diesel burning is problematic when it is done near residential houses. In my opinion, 30,000 liters of diesel that are close to a residential area (20,000 liters are added to the 10,000 liters that are already there), even if they are buried in the ground, endanger the tenants who live nearby, as well as those who are yet to live in the area I would have expected them to attach the tank to the Electric Company building or alternatively to use safer energy. I see it from my window, it looks very close to the houses. The residents should have been informed if they were adding 20,000 liters of diesel so close to the houses.
“Basic rules must be observed, otherwise an unacceptable risk to the public will be created”
Yaron Hanan, an expert in emergency situations and risk management, explained the dangers of a diesel tank: “Preparing an infrastructure for electricity generation in a decentralized manner, as a backup for an emergency, is extremely essential at this time, especially when the threat of an escalation of the war in the north hovers above us, to the point of damaging the electricity supply infrastructure in the country and in the metropolis Haifa. However, putting such a large tank to store diesel fuel near the generator is a big risk in itself,” Hanan says.
