Alfonso Chocano Mérida, former mayor of Nuevo Progreso, San Marcos, was sentenced to five years in prison for stealing Q1 million 40 thousand, for which he issued seven checks, reported the Prosecutor’s Office against Money Laundering or Other Assets.
According to the prosecutor’s office, the Quetzaltenango Multi-Personal Criminal Court of First Instance, after analyzing the evidence, sentenced the former official for the crimes of embezzlement and passive bribery.
“As a consequence, he was imposed 5 years in prison, Q20 thousand and Q10 thousand fine for each crime. In addition, he must pay Q25 thousand as compensation and as an accessory penalty he was disqualified from holding public office for five years, the prosecutor’s office indicated.
Chocano Mérida was mayor of Nuevo Progreso, San Marcos from 2004 to 2008, during that period he issued seven checks from the municipal account to subtract Q1 million 40 thousand.
