Heinz Hoenig has been in hospital for several weeks, waiting for another life-saving operation. Now his wife is giving a worrying update.
Annika Kärsten-Hoenig actually wanted to appear on “stern TV am Sonntag” at the weekend and talk about her husband. Actor Heinz Hoenig has been in a Berlin hospital for several weeks. But then she suddenly received bad news from the hospital. The doctors told her that his condition had worsened overnight. She therefore canceled her appearance in the studio at short notice.
In the evening she joined the broadcast and gave another update: “Today Heinz is doing well, given the circumstances. Although “well” is always a matter of interpretation.” The past 13 weeks have been marked by ups and downs, she described the time as a “rollercoaster ride”. At the moment it is a challenge that Hoenig has to be weaned off the artificial respiration. “It’s not that easy. But he’s fighting through it,” said the 39-year-old.
Annika Kärsten-Hoenig visits her husband in the hospital for up to six hours every day. During this time, she helps him to mobilize his body again. “That’s very important; he’s lost a lot of muscle mass from lying down for so long. We’re trying to build that back up now,” says his wife.
In April, Heinz Hoenig was admitted to hospital. A bacterial infection had damaged a stent in his heart. He required emergency surgery and was initially put into an artificial coma. Another operation on his esophagus followed. However, an important operation on his aorta is still pending and cannot be carried out due to his condition. “The operation carries an incredibly high risk anyway. And if you were to operate on it now in his condition, you would have even less chance,” Annika Kärsten-Hoenig told RTL a few days earlier. It is not known whether the operation will be postponed even further due to recent developments.
