(ANSA) – ROME, 02 AUG – This year too, August remains the top month for Italians’ holidays with a record number of departures expected: in fact, 17.5 million people have planned to travel, one million more than last year, for a total of 19.2 million departures. This emerges from the focus on Italians’ August holidays by the Confcommercio tourism observatory. Long-term holidays, at least 7 days, are on the rise, offsetting a slight decline in medium-term trips, from 3 to 6 days. Italian families have allocated a total budget of 15.5 billion euros for August holidays, an increase of 1.5 billion compared to 2023. Of this amount, 10 billion euros are reserved for long-term holidays, with an average expenditure of 1,040 euros per person, 10% more than last year’s 945 euros. Holidays dedicated to rest in 47% of cases, to dedicate to themselves and their loved ones for those 4 out of 10 interviewees who also declare themselves passionate about the typical food and wine products of the chosen destinations. Whether the stay is short, medium or long, 6 out of 10 Italians still choose a tourist-receptive structure for their overnight stays. Hotels are in the lead, collecting 22% of the preferences alone, but the performance of campsites and holiday villages is also positive. Second homes and hospitality with friends and relatives are the most common choice among the others, with 18% of interviewees opting for this solution. In August, Italians clearly choose the sea: 3 out of 10 cases, well above the mountains, which total 12% of preferences. They are followed by cities, places of art, each chosen by 10% of interviewees. Over 7 out of 10 aim for national destinations, and two thirds of these do so by leaving their own region. Therefore, a decidedly interesting perimeter of travel, to which we add a 19% of departures for Europe and an 8% for extra-European destinations. Sicily, Puglia and Calabria make up the top of the list of the most popular regions, which also includes Emilia Romagna, followed by Tuscany, Sardinia and Trentino Alto Adige. Abroad, as in general throughout the summer, Greece, Spain and France have practically no rivals. (ANSA).
