Conference in Beni Mellal on the preservation and development of water resources

This meeting, which is part of the activities of the cultural, artistic and sports days, organized on the sidelines of the festivities marking the celebration of the glorious Throne Festival, aims to examine the issue of water scarcity as well as the means of transcending this problem with a view to improving the management and rationalization of this vital commodity.

This meeting is also an opportunity for local stakeholders and civil society organizations to present their respective visions on this issue and to develop sustainable solutions.

Speaking on this occasion, the Wali of the Béni Mellal-Khénifra region, governor of the province of Béni Mellal Khatib El Hebil spoke of the great interest and support provided in accordance with the High Royal Instructions to the issue of water in our country, stressing that the preservation of water resources depends on the establishment of sustainable governance as an imperative that is imposed.

He deplored the worrying water situation due to climate change and lack of rainfall, as well as the high pressure on water resources, before reviewing a set of urgent measures taken and implemented at the regional level, aimed at the rational management of water resources and raising awareness of the need to preserve this vital resource.

He also specified that colossal efforts are underway to accelerate the implementation of projects planned under the National Drinking Water Supply and Irrigation Program 2020-2027.

For his part, the President of the Regional Council, Adil Barakat recalled the problem of water deficit and its direct impact on water reserves and the agricultural sector of the region, stressing that the problem of water shortage is at the center of the priorities of the elected council.

In this regard, he reviewed the efforts made by the Council, in particular by reserving a whole axis for it within the framework of the regional development programme, the aim being to address the impacts of climate change and to mobilise water resources through the construction and rehabilitation of small dams and hill lakes.

In his speech on this occasion, the Chairman of the Council of the Oum Er Rbia Hydraulic Basin Agency (ABHOER) mentioned the advisory role of the council through the examination and submission of opinions on water-related issues, citing the Integrated Water Resources Development Master Plan as a reference document that will serve as a guide in the sustainable use and management of water resources for the years to come.

This scientific conference, organized over two days, aims to raise awareness of the importance of water and the problem of the scarcity of this commodity, in addition to examining a set of practical measures taken within the framework of proactive policies implemented at the level of the Béni Mellal-Khénifra region, and which aim as a whole to preserve water and ensure a sustainable supply to the inhabitants of the region.
