The Ministry of National Defense’s Remains Excavation and Identification Team announced on the 30th that it confirmed the identity of the remains discovered in the Jeokgeun Mountain area in Geunnam-myeon, Cheorwon-gun, Gangwon-do last October as the late Sergeant Oh Du-yong, a member of the ROK Army’s 2nd Division.

Confirmation of the deceased’s identity was possible thanks to various efforts, including excavation of remains by South Korean soldiers, mobile investigation through verification of medical records, and collection of genetic samples from the bereaved family.

Last October, based on military research, the state-owned organization conducted an excavation in the area of ​​Jeokgeunsan Mountain, Geunnam-myeon, Cheorwon-gun, Gangwon-do, where the South Korean army fought a fierce battle with the Chinese army, and discovered one human remains.

Afterwards, after the mobile investigation officer confirmed that the deceased’s domicile was Goseong-gun, Gyeongsangnam-do in the medical records, they were able to find the deceased’s youngest sister Oh Jeom-sun (89 years old) and two maternal nephews by comparing them with the birth certificate. Genetic samples were collected and analyzed to confirm family relationships with the deceased.

The deceased was a member of the ROK Army’s 2nd Division, and after participating in several battles, he was killed while fighting against a large-scale Chinese offensive in the ‘Battle of Hill 734’ in Cheorwon, Gangwon-do.

The ‘Battle of Hill 734’ is a fierce battle between the ROK Army and the Chinese Army to secure Hill 734, a key area of ​​the central front connecting Jeokgeunsan Mountain in Geunnam-myeon, Cheorwon-gun, Gangwon-do, and Gimhwa-eup.

At the request of the bereaved family, this ‘National Hero Return Event’ was held at the bereaved family’s home in Goseong-gun, Gyeongsangnam-do, the deceased’s hometown.

Oh Jeom-sun, the deceased’s youngest sister and representative of the bereaved family, said that the night before she received a call from the National Security Agency about the possibility of identification, she had a dream in which she saw her older brother coming into their childhood home.

Oh Jeom-sun said, “I don’t know how much I cried thinking about my brother. “I think it was in a dream that my remains were returned,” he said. “I would like to thank the Ministry of National Defense and bury my brother in the national cemetery.”
