RUTSHURU – The conflict between Congolese fishermen and the Ugandan navy has still not had its last word. 54 Congolese fishermen’s outboard motors were stopped by the Ugandan navy on the waters of Lake Edward, in the province of North Kivu.

This information is reported by Aimé Mukanda, a notable from Rutshuru this Friday, May 12, 2023. According to him, twenty-eight outboard motors are from the Kasindi-port fishery and twenty-six belong to Kyavinyonge fishermen, in Beni territory.

“One of the big questions I ask myself is to know the role of our navy which is often absent on Lake Edward, because the Ugandans take advantage of this absence to come and kidnap our fishermen and their fishing equipment on the Congolese coast of the lake. You should know that Lake Edward is managed by the two countries, including the DRC at 75%, “said the notable.

It should be noted that 51 outboard motors cannot be found in the warehouses of the central prison of Katwe in Uganda and 230 canoes which were seized by the Ugandan “pirate” navy have not yet been handed over to Congolese fishermen.

Aimé Mbusa Mukanda asks the President of the Republic to be able to change all the marine commands on Lake Edward which, according to him “do nothing” to find a solution to this problem which only impoverishes the population of the North- Kivu.
