Confusion in the Sri Lankan Parliament over the word ‘national leader’!

by time news

Confusion erupted in parliament after Tamil National People’s Front (TNPF) parliamentarian Selvarasa Gajendran woke up LTTE leader Velupillai Prabhakaran as a “national leader”.

He said this during today’s parliamentary session.

Upon learning more about this,

During the committee stage debate on the 2022 budget in the Sri Lankan parliament, Minister Douglas Devananda referred to the LTTE leader as a drug lord.

Tamil National People’s Front (TNPF) MP Selvarasa Gajendran used the term “national leader” to deny this.

Meanwhile, female state minister Sita Arambepola stood up and said it was unacceptable for a terrorist leader to claim to be the national leader in the Sri Lankan parliament.

Sita Arambepola also demanded that Selvaraja Gajendran’s comments be removed from the parliamentary note.

Member of Parliament Velukumar, who presided over the meeting, commented,

He noted that it was the right of MP Gajendran. However, he pointed out that he would inform the Speaker about the removal of Gajendran’s opinion from the Parliamentary note.

Subsequently, other members of the ruling party demanded that the term national leader be removed from the parliamentary agenda.

However, Velukumar, a member of the House, refused to accept it and stated that he could only report the matter to the Speaker on the basis of his authority.

Addressing the gathering, MP Gajendrakumar Ponnambalam said MPs could have different views. He noted, however, that those views could not be forcibly silenced by other members.
