The Congress has initiated talks with the regional organization Soram People’s Movement (ZPM) in Mizoram, as the possibility of a Trishanku cabinet looms. According to exit polls, no single party may secure an absolute majority in Mizoram, leading to speculations of a coalition government.

The newly formed Soram People’s Movement had fielded candidates as independents in the last election, and former IPS officer Lalduhoma is the chief ministerial candidate of the party. On the other hand, the Congress, led by state Congress president Lal Sawta, aims to make a comeback in the state’s political landscape.

After experiencing a setback in the 2018 Mizoram assembly elections, the Congress is keen on regaining its foothold in the North-Eastern states. The party has been strategizing and campaigning vigorously, with leaders such as Maharashtra Professional Congress president Mathew Antony and AICC’s media communication coordinator, Mathew Anthony, playing pivotal roles.

Speaking about the campaign strategies, Mathew Antony mentioned that the Congress has tailored its approach to resonate with the educated population in Mizoram. Despite facing challenges such as restrictions on door-to-door campaigns, the party has employed innovative methods like QR code campaigns and postcard appeals to engage with the electorate.

The 2018 assembly elections saw the Congress facing a setback due to various factors, including the lifting of prohibition on liquor and the party’s strained relationship with the Christian congregations. However, the Congress has indicated that it has learned from past mistakes and is approaching the current elections with caution and a more neutral stance towards the Christian churches.
