Amritsar: In Punjab, senior leaders, including four former ministers, have joined the BJP in retaliation for the Congress. Former ministers Rajkumar Verka, Balbir Singh Sidhu, Gurpreet Singh Kankar and Sundar Shyam Arora joined the BJP in Chandigarh in the presence of Union Home Minister Amit Shah.

Three former MLAs from the Congress and the Shiromani Akali Dal have joined the BJP. Earlier, former Congress state president Sunil Jha had joined the BJP. State Congress president Amarinder Singh Raja said the change of party of MLAs was a blessing for the Congress.

He attributed the collapse of the Congress to such leaders. In the 2022 assembly elections, the Congress won only 18 seats in the 117 – member assembly. With the coup victory, the AAP seized power.
