Chennai: Kamal Haasan, who expressed his support for the Congress in the Erode East Assembly by-election in Tamil Nadu, is reportedly aiming for the MP position with the party’s support. In response to the question why he did not get it, the actor said. Congress candidate E.V.K.S. Makkal Neethi Mayyam (MNM) of Ilangovan Kamal Haasan had yesterday announced unconditional support.
“We have come to this decision keeping national interest in mind. It is of national importance to unite against communal forces. I will try my best for Elangovan’s success” – said Kamal. For the first time since the formation of the party, Makkal Neethi Mayam is supporting the Congress.
Kamal Haasan also joined the Bharat Jodo Yatra led by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi when it reached Delhi. Asked whether this support would carry over to the 2024 general elections, he said it was too early to comment.
Elangovan, who is also the former president of the Tamil Nadu Congress, is the candidate of the Congress-DMK alliance. For the by-elections to be held on February 27, his son Sanjay pulled the strings for Sampath, but the party leadership decided that Ilangovan should contest. He was elected to the Lok Sabha in 2004 and was the Union Minister of Textiles. He was the President of TNCC from 2014-2017.
