/ A member of Congress called on US President Joe Biden to “step down immediately” because he is “not mentally fit” according to a recently issued report on his “mental health”, warning that Biden has the nuclear weapons code in his hand, which is a matter of concern.
Pennsylvania Republican Congressman Guy Reschenthaler, a Navy veteran, said Biden should step down “immediately” after special counsel Robert Hur’s report on the handling of classified documents.
In his report, Hur, a former Maryland attorney general under former President Donald Trump, said he chose not to bring criminal charges against Biden after a 15-month investigation into his handling of the documents. He added that “it would be difficult to convict the president because he is an elderly, well-meaning man with a poor memory, as he could not tell investigators the date of his son Beau Biden’s death.”
Hur’s report came months before the US presidential election, in which Biden, 81, is likely to compete with Trump, 77, and coincided with several slips of the tongue by the current and former presidents.
“Biden should step down immediately, based on the fact that you have a special counsel’s report that says he is not mentally fit to handle classified documents,” Reschenthaler told Fox News.
“This is the man who has the nuclear codes of the United States,” the congressman added, sounding wary.
What is a nuclear code?
In the United States, this term refers to the president’s sole authority to issue the final order to use nuclear weapons if necessary.
If a nuclear attack were to occur on the United States, there is no button the president could press.
Instead, a series of codes must be activated before missiles can be launched at various locations in the United States for nuclear retaliation.
The US president has these codes, known as the “nuclear code,” which means he is the only one who can finally approve the launch of such an attack.
Reschenthaler called on Biden to step down, while pointing to parts of the report that described the president as “not knowing when he would become vice president, or when his son died.”
Last Thursday, Reschenthaler wrote on Twitter that “Joe Biden lacks the mental fitness to be President of the United States. He does not know when he was Vice President, and has no idea of the major events in his personal life.”
“How does he have access to our nuclear codes?” he asked in disbelief.
He told Fox News bluntly that Biden administration officials should be “ashamed of themselves” for not invoking the 25th Amendment to the US Constitution in the wake of the Hur report.
“This is the man who is supposed to handle all the issues on the international stage, whether it’s the war in Gaza, dealing with the Houthis firing missiles at ships in the Red Sea, or our enemies China and Russia, you name it,” he continued.
Constitutional Amendment
This amendment allows the president to be removed from office if he is found to be unable to lead the country.
The Twenty-Fifth Amendment explains the transfer of power in the United States, in the event of the resignation, death, removal, or temporary disability of the President.
The amendment transfers the powers of the president to his vice president, until the latter can return.
The amendment allows the vice president and members of the cabinet to remove the president if he is deemed unable to perform his duties.
The president is given the opportunity to respond, and if he refuses to take action, Congress steps in. The decision to remove the president in the House of Representatives and the Senate requires a two-thirds majority.
