Democratic Texas Representative Henry Cuellar became a victim of a terrifying armed carjacking on Monday night. The incident took place near Cuellar’s residence in the Navy Yard area of Washington, D.C., just a few blocks away from the Capitol building.

According to sources, three to four assailants held guns to Cuellar’s head, confiscating his car and phone. An alert was swiftly sent to fellow congressional members, informing them about the shocking incident, as reported by ABC News.

Cuellar’s Chief of Staff, Jacob Hochberg, confirmed the carjacking news, releasing a statement to ABC News late Monday night. “As Congressman Cuellar was parking his car this evening, three armed assailants approached him and stole his vehicle. Luckily, he was not harmed and is currently working with local law enforcement. We would like to express our gratitude to the Metro PD and Capitol Police for their prompt response and for successfully recovering the Congressman’s vehicle,” the statement read.

However, the Metropolitan Police Department of Washington, D.C. did not officially confirm Cuellar’s identity as the victim. In a statement given to ABC News, the department said, “There was a report of an armed carjacking that occurred at approximately 9:32 pm at the intersection of New Jersey and K Street, Southeast. We currently do not have information regarding the victim’s identity.”

The incident brings attention to the alarming rise of carjackings in Washington, D.C. According to D.C. Police, as of Sunday, there have been a staggering 750 carjackings in the city, with 75% of them involving the use of firearms.
