Using the TV as an extra-large monitor for your PC or notebook – that shouldn’t be a problem, should it? Our instructions will show you how to do it.

Whether as a larger monitor in the home office or as an alternative to the small laptop screen for movie night: Sometimes it can be practical to display content from your PC or laptop on the television. These are the simplest and most common methods.

Modern televisions have at least one HDMI socket. Most modern computers and notebooks are also equipped with one. If not, there are adapters that you can use to add an HDMI output to your computer. This may be necessary if your notebook only has USB-C ports, like the Macbook Air.

  • Step 1: Connect one end of the HDMI cable to the HDMI port on your PC or notebook.
  • Step 2: Connect the other end of the cable to an HDMI port on your TV.
  • Step 3: Turn on the TV and select the appropriate HDMI input (usually via the “Source” button on the remote control).

Alternatively, you can establish a wireless connection between your laptop or PC and your TV. On Windows computers, this is possible via the wireless standard Miracastwhich is included in the operating system. A prerequisite for this, however, is that both the computer and the PC have a WLAN interface. Modern devices should be equipped with this.

Step 1: Turn on your TV. If you are using a Miracast adapter – also called a dongle – it must be connected to the TV.

Step 2: Make sure Wi-Fi is enabled on your PC.

Step 3: Under “Settings,” go to the “Screen” subsection, scroll down, and select “Connect to wireless display.” Alternatively, you can find the setting by entering “Cast” in the search field at the bottom left.

Step 4: Follow the remaining instructions on the PC screen. If no instructions appear, you are already done.

Mac users also have the option of connecting their device wirelessly to a television using the AirPlay tool. Many modern SmartTVs are compatible with this Apple transmission standard.

Step 1: Make sure your Mac and TV are on the same Wi-Fi network. Typically, this is your home network, which is where both devices access the Internet.

Step 2: Click the Control Center icon in the menu bar, then click the Screen Mirroring icon and select your TV.

Step 3: Enter a four-digit code on your Mac when prompted.

Step 4: To set whether your TV should mirror or extend, click the Screen Mirroring icon, then select “Mirror built-in display” or “Use as a separate display.”

If you do not get a signal from your PC on your TV despite following these instructions, make sure that you have selected the correct inputs on the TV and that the cables are connected correctly.

If you are having problems with the picture, you should check your PC’s screen resolution settings. Make sure they match the capabilities and screen size of your TV. Modern TVs display the picture in a resolution of 3840 x 2160 pixels. If you have no sound, check whether your PC’s audio output is set to the TV. You can change this in the computer’s sound settings.
