In an unusual gesture, the criminal gangs of the Aburrá Valley, part of the dialogue table with the national government, have announced a voluntary ceasefire for three days on the occasion of Mother’s Day. From May 10 to 13, 2024, all armed actions that endanger the life and integrity of citizens will be suspended, according to a statement issued by these criminal structures.

The statement, issued from the Itagüí Peace Table, expresses the intention of criminal gangs to contribute to the construction of urban peace in the Aburrá Valley region. This measure adds to a series of actions planned to reduce crime levels in the area.

In addition to the cessation of violent activities, criminal gangs expressed their willingness to collaborate with peace processes in the territories. They stressed that this decision is not an isolated act, but part of a continuous effort to de-escalate urban violence and dialogue with the National Government.

In the statement, they address directly the President of the Republic, Gustavo Petro, requesting greater commitment from the institutions to establish a stable and permanent dialogue that allows progress in the peace objectives set by the national government.

Finally, they call on all armed groups in the country to join their initiative. Its objective is to achieve a milestone in the construction of Urban Peace during the weekend of celebrating Mother’s Day, and move towards the constitution of a National Urban Peace Roundtable.
