A survey conducted in the spring showed that as many as 4 out of 5 respondents find bread and fresh meat in their shopping basket, and 3 out of 4 regularly buy products such as milk, sour cream, cheese and butter.
The interviewed residents indicated that the most important criteria for choosing food products and products are the country of origin, high quality, as well as the price-quality ratio.
Lithuanian brands are associated with quality
According to the survey, almost half of the respondents say that they prioritize quality when choosing milk, fresh meat and bread.
When looking for quality, residents tend to prefer independent and Lithuanian brands. When the respondents were asked to spontaneously mention the brands of each category that they associate with quality, “Dvaro”, “Vilniaus duona” and “Biovela” were named the most.
“The mentioned brands have been operating on the market for many years, they invest not only in the quality of their products, but also do not forget other ingredients – they pay attention to marketing and advertising tools, they have a clear positioning. The study showed that these brands also have a regular buyer of their products, whose loyalty takes years to earn”, concludes Tomas Markūnas, strategy manager of Havas Group.
Most of the time, the quality of food products, as indicated by every second respondent, is judged by the taste and good composition of the products. Lithuanianness, naturalness, environmental friendliness, brand reliability are also mentioned in the quality criteria ranked by the respondents.
Actively reads labels
About every second resident of the country always or usually pays attention to product labels to find out the country of origin when choosing food products.
Considerable attention is also paid to the Lithuanian origin of the products. It is important for at least every second respondent when buying bread, baguette, buns, fresh meat and meat products, milk, cottage cheese and sour cream. Women and older residents over 55 usually draw attention to the country of origin and Lithuanianness.
The fact that there is a greater desire to purchase products of Lithuanian origin is also proven by the list of the most frequently chosen brands named by the respondents. Among the most popular, such Lithuanian brands as “Vilniaus duona” and “Dvaro” dominate, whose products are usually bought by 2 out of 5 respondents.
“Biržų duonas” and “Biovela” products are regularly bought by every third person, while 1 in 4 survey participants stated that they usually buy the products of “Rokiškios”, “Žemaitijos”, “Utenos mesos”, “Vilniaus Paukštyno” and “Krekenavas” brands.
“We see that the country’s residents have well-formed shopping habits, trust the products of local producers, and the popularity of brands is directly related to the residents’ attitude to their quality. If the product is considered to be of high quality, then there are more chances that it will end up in the shopping cart, regardless of the category”, assures T. Markūnas.
The consumer survey was conducted by the Norstat LT company from April 26 to May 13 this year. During it, 1,100 respondents between the ages of 18 and 64 were interviewed.
