After a few moments of silence, the Pope pronounced the ritual words of the creation of the 21 new cardinals and one by one their names, some of which were cheered by the faithful present in St. Peter’s Square.
Standing before the Holy Father, the new Princes of the Church, whom the Pope reminded in the homily that they are servants “and not officials,” renewed their adherence to the Pope and to the Creed of the Catholic Church, which was proclaimed in Latin:
“I promise and swear to remain from now and forever as long as I live, faithful to Christ and his Gospel, constantly obedient to the Holy Roman Apostolic Church. To Saint Peter in the person of the Supreme Pontiff and his canonically elected successors. Always preserve in word and deed my communion with the Catholic Church. Not to reveal to anyone what has been entrusted to me for safekeeping and whose disclosure could cause harm or dishonor to the Holy Church. “To fulfill with great diligence and fidelity the duties to which I am called in my service of the Church according to the norms of law.”
