The young aristocrat Constance Marten and her partner, a convicted rape convict, were found in Brighton and arrested. on the run for months across England: but for the moment there is no trace of the child that the woman gave birth to in early January.
Police have launched searches throughout the area, with dogs, drones and helicopters: and invited the population to help by inspecting sheds and shelters in the open. Now it’s all about that child, said the police, who are currently questioning the couple.
She Constance Marten, 35 years old, heiress of a noble family linked to royalty, a beauty already celebrated in high society circles who had lost track of her after giving herself to a nomadic life with her boyfriend, 48-year-old Mark Gordona man who served twenty years in prison in America for rape and assault.
The couple had been missing since January 5, when their car was found burnt out by the side of a road in northern England. Constance and Mark were kicked out of their East London flat last Augustaccused of not paying the rent and of damages: since then they have lived moving from city to city and sleeping in Airbnb, thanks to her almost unlimited funds. But at the beginning of January they vanished into thin air: it is assumed that the young woman in those days also gave birth to the child, perhaps in that same car which was later burned and which had been purchased shortly before by paying in cash.
Constance and Mark, on the night of 6 January, therefore took a taxi to go to the east coast of Essex, traveling 400 kilometers and paying with a bundle of banknotes: it is thought that they wanted to embark on a ferry for Europe, but then the next day they were spotted in Colchester, also in Essex, and finally in an east London station. The CCTV cameras filmed them wrapped in scarves and hats, in a clear attempt not to be recognized: but why and from what they were fleeing, remains a mystery. The police searched everywhere for them, but the couple always managed to elude the hunt by paying in cash and using false names in hotels.
The father of the young Napier Marten had launched an appeal to his daughter from the BBC microphones last monthwith his unmistakable upper class accent: I beg you to find a way to contact the police as soon as possible, he had said, adding then that he was ready to do whatever was necessary for your safe return to us.
Constance, before meeting Mark, had enjoyed a life of comfort and privilege: raised in an eighteenth-century mansion also used as a set for the film Emma with Gwyneth Paltrow, he had attended exclusive private schools which he alternated with holidays in Switzerland and America.
At 24 the magazine flavorsbible of the English aristocracy, had named her beauty of the month: in the interview she told of parties in noble estates and of the desire to get a turtle tattooed on her foot.
But in 2016, the young woman broke up with her family and left her life behind after meeting Mark Gordon, a Briton who had moved to America with his family as a child and was sentenced there to 20 years in prison. for assaulting and raping a woman when she was only 14 years old.
Having served his sentence, Mark had been deported to Great Britain, but it is unclear how his fates intersected with Constance’swho before then seemed destined to gravitate to a very different circle: her father had been one of Elizabeth’s pages, her grandmother was the queen mother’s goddaughter, her grandfather was George VI’s squire.
