Cause

There appears to be one specific culprit of the feeling of hunger. Worst yet, we use it every day. Some even with every meal. The ingredient in question? Salty! In many people, an increased sodium content would lead to a stronger feeling of hunger and therefore also to a greater chance of weight gain. This is according to a study published in the Journal of Clinical Investigation. According to experts, more than a hundred years of research preceded the publication.

Research

In the study, conducted by German and American researchers, ten Russian astronauts in space tried different diets related to salt intake. The researchers wanted to see the effect of a higher salt intake: about 12 grams per day on average, which is normal in a Russian diet, or a lower salt intake: about 6 grams per day, which is recommended by nutritionists. What turned out? When the astronauts went on the high-salt diet, they drank less water. That probably has to do with the fact that their bodies were retaining more water at the time. In addition, the astronauts turned out to be much more hungry on the high-salt diet, while they consumed exactly the same number of calories per day as on the low-salt diet.
