All you need to know about “Constellation”, the new drama of Apple TV+ is that there is a mother and there is a daughter, and the mother is an astronaut. It is almost a genre in itself, movies and series in which astronauts or space explorers confront the maternal guilt feelings about the children And the girls who were left alone at home, usually against the background of a catastrophe or an apocalypse, have no choice one way or another. The excellent Nomi Rapace (“The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo”, “Jack Ryan”) is Jo Erickson, an astronaut who survives an accident on the space station and returns to Earth only to find that certain parts of her life are not coming back together, that her daughter is not sure who she remembers As her daughter, that she sees strange things in the mirror and that maybe she actually saw something in outer space that everyone is trying to hide. In short, great joy for fans of bingalactic tragedies.
Adding to the atmosphere of broken paranoia are the members of the main cast alongside her, led by the always wonderful Jonathan Banks (“Breaking Bad”, “Trust Sol”) and James D’Arcy, two actors who play douchey roles. They are joined by a pan-European cast with a German emphasis, because despite the Hollywood groove, this is a German production that was shot mostly in Berlin (and partly in Lapland), received a record support of 10 million euros from the German Film Fund, against the background of the growing trend of heavy government investment in original productions in Germany in particular and in Europe in general .
The first three episodes (out of a total of eight) have been uploaded to the streaming servers of Apple TV+, and based on the powerful opening episode, it can be concluded that this is a nerve-racking psychological thriller with a strong emotional impact, reflections on the essence of human existence and time/space, and quite a bit of sheer horror. The high quality standard that Apple TV+ sets for its productions has already contributed to the world some really great MDB series (“Detachment”, “Silo”, “For the sake of all humanity”, “Mossad”), so one can hope that “Contellation” will rise above its formula.
