New Delhi: A private member’s bill has been tabled in the Rajya Sabha proposing a constitutional amendment to appoint a governor. CPM MPV. The bill passed by Sivadasan was allowed to be introduced. The amendment calls for the election of a governor by MLAs and local government representatives.

The bill seeks to bring the CPM’s criticism of the governor’s appointment to national attention and to discuss it. The bill will be introduced in the Rajya Sabha on Friday.

The bill includes three main proposals. It is proposed that Articles 153, 155 and 156 of the Constitution be amended. There is also a suggestion that the power of more than one state should not be given to a single governor. The bill proposes to extend the term to five years and, if necessary, remove the governor by a resolution tabled in the legislature.

Since the Central Government opposes these proposals and is a private member’s bill, the bill usually does not go beyond the presentation process. However, the CPM hopes that the issue will reach national attention and be discussed.
