The U.S. Coast Guard has opened a temporary shipping lane (channel) in the Patapsco River in Baltimore for vessels involved in lifting the collapsed structures of the Francis Scott Key Bridge and clearing the main shipping lane to Baltimore Harbor, reports Associated Press.

This temporary shipping channel will also allow some of the shallower draft barges and tugboats “stuck” in the Port of Baltimore after the large container ship Dali after losing control on the night of March 26, crashed into a bridge abutment, causing the central part of the bridge and its containing metal structures to collapse. After the ship’s crew broadcast an emergency signal, the police managed to close the bridge before it collapsed. However, the team of eight road repair workers was unable to evacuate from the bridge. Two workers were rescued after the bridge collapsed, the remains of two were found in a sunken car. Another four were not found and are presumed dead.

A chaotic rattler

Maryland Gov. Wes Moore said at a press conference Monday afternoon that his top priority is finding the remains of the four missing people. This is followed by the release of shipping lanes to the port. He said he understands how important it is to clear the way for freight carriers as soon as possible to one of the most important ports on the US East Coast, which is especially actively used by automakers. At the same time, he added that this work is extremely difficult and risky.
