Construction is the economic sector that has the highest debt to Joint social security center (Common Social Security Center, CCSS). The outstanding payments from these companies stand at 32.5 million euros, with the total outstanding contributions currently amounting to 210 million euros.
The figures were released by the Minister of Social Security, Martine Deprez (CSV), in response to a parliamentary question from deputies Mars Di Bartolomeo and Claude Haagen (LSAP) on employers’ delays in paying social security contributions.
In addition to construction, several other areas have significant debts to the CSSS, such as Horeca (18.1 million euros), services (17.5 million euros) and commerce (16.1 million euros).
Along with active companies, those that went bankrupt are also included in the accounts for late payments. Here too, construction, which has seen a wave of bankruptcies in the last year, comes first on the list, with more than 34 million euros missing.
This is followed by accommodation and restaurants, with a debt of nine million, transport, with seven million, and commerce, with six million.
Construction prices continue to fall in a year marked by bankruptcies
After reaching a peak of 350 million in debt in 2021, following the suspension of coercive collection during the pandemic, and being conditioned by the war in Ukraine and inflation, the financial situation of the CCSS eased in 2022, stabilizing the balance negative at 250 million.
In 2023, unpaid contributions totaled 200 million euros, which will have risen again this year due to the current crisis in construction, said Martine Deprez.
