Consum earns 57.7 million in 2022, 15% less, due to the reduction in margins

ValenciaThe supermarket cooperative Consum closed 2022 with a profit of 57.7 million euros. The figure represents 15% less than in 2021. The company has attributed this shortening of earnings to “the reduction of the net margin” applied to contain prices, to “the increase in the rate of job creation and the investments made” .

The results of the Valencian company were presented this Thursday by its general manager, Juan Luis Durich, at a press conference in Valencia. During his speech, Durich explained that in 2022 Consum reduced its net profit margin by 0.50 points, and detailed that this is a decline that is being repeated this year. In terms of turnover, this rose to 3,864 million, 14.4% more. The workforce also grew, from 1,125 workers to 19,377 employees.

On the contrary, internet sales slowed down their evolution, since they grew less than total sales, with 7.2% more and an amount of 65.8 million euros. Durich has justified this slowdown at the end of the restrictions due to the pandemic and the collection of customer service.

In the investment chapter, in 2022 Consum allocated 168.4 million (+12.9%) to the opening of 50 new supermarkets – 12 of its own and 38 Charter franchises – and to the expansion and renovation of 41 stores . At the moment, the cooperative has 874 supermarkets – 477 of its own and 403 under the Charter brand – located in the Valencian Country, Catalonia, Castilla-La Mancha, Murcia, Andalusia and Aragon. In 2023, the company plans to open 50 more establishments (15 of its own and 35 Charter).

New logistics platforms in Aldaia and Montcada and Reixac

Consum hopes to expand its distribution capacity in the metropolitan area of ​​the city of Valencia with the launch of a logistics platform in the municipality of Aldaia, located in the Horta region. The facility will have an area of ​​400,000 m2 and will be in operation in 2025. It will do the same in the metropolitan area of ​​Barcelona with recently acquired land in the town of Montcada i Reixac (Vallès Occidental) that will be ready in 2028. The cooperative is also expanding the Las Torres de Cotillas platform, in Murcia, and is preparing a similar project in the Andalusian city of Antequera.
