Consumer Rights: 5 Issues Demanding Change

by Mark Thompson

2025 demanded a more cautious approach from Thai consumers. Beyond the rising cost of living, shoppers faced misleading advertising, unfair contracts, and rapidly evolving technologies outpacing legal protections. The consumer Council identified five key issues driving change, proving that collective consumer power can deliver real results.

The consumer Council served as a readily accessible resource, collecting information, issuing warnings, proposing policy changes, and utilizing legal avenues to safeguard consumer rights.

This look back at 5 critically important matters of 2025 not only captured consumer attention but also fostered greater awareness and collaboration toward tangible societal improvements.

Sunscreen Test Results Top Consumer Concerns

Perhaps unsurprisingly, the issue of sunscreen effectiveness grabbed the most attention. Testing of 20 sunscreen samples, conducted by the consumer Council alongside the Foundation for Consumers, revealed that some products didn’t deliver the level of sun protection advertised.

In response, the Consumer council is preparing a “Draft of Influencer ethics” to ensure influencers clearly and honestly disclose advertising support and product information. This aims to provide consumers with accurate information and reduce the risk of purchasing subpar products.

Beyond sunscreen, the Council also tested sanitary napkins and air purifiers, empowering consumers to make informed choices and question product claims.

Lawsuit Highlights unfair Practices by Srisawat

A lawsuit against Srisawat Company regarding potentially unfair interest rates and contract terms resonated with many consumers facing credit challenges. The case underscored the vulnerability of borrowers often confronted with high rates and limited negotiating power.

The Consumer Council assisted over 10 consumers who reported being exploited by unfair contracts with Srisawat. Recently, the Council filed a lawsuit against Srisawat and its affiliates in the Civil Court, alleging deceptive practices such as signing blank contracts, failing to disclose actual interest rates, and charging rates exceeding legal limits.

The Council is seeking the return of excess interest, correct interest rate adjustments, compensation for affected borrowers, and the revocation of collateral rights to prevent further exploitation. This case could set a new standard for fair lending practices nationwide.

The Council also continues to advocate for “Fair Contracts” in collaboration with the Office of the Consumer Protection Board (OCPB) regarding car leases, gold loans, phone services, and rental agreements. The Office of the Basic Education Commission recently announced Laws governing rental contracts prohibiting excessive charges for utilities, further strengthening consumer protections.

Consumers Push Back Against Expensive Electricity Bills

Since its inception in 2021, the Consumer Council has closely monitored energy prices, recognizing access to affordable electricity as a basic right.

In 2025, rising electricity costs became a significant burden for households. The Council didn’t simply reflect consumer hardship; it delved into the complex electricity price structure, questioning resolutions by The Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) regarding electricity purchase rates and ft rates. The Council argued these resolutions could shift costs onto consumers in the long run.

This advocacy helped consumers understand their rights and transformed a intricate technical issue into a public debate.it highlighted that electricity costs aren’t solely determined by usage but also by energy policies and regulatory decisions, empowering consumers to demand transparency and accountability.
