Contact between the new president and media officials

On this occasion, the President of the CNC, Espérance Ndayizeye praised the work done by the media while respecting the legal texts which govern the profession of journalism. Espérance Ndayizeye nevertheless deplored the escalation observed in certain media, for subjects which are not of public interest.

The President of the CNC also recommended that media managers respect the balance of information by giving the floor to all parties concerned. She also reminded them to give voice to all segments of the population.

Espérance Ndayizeye took this opportunity to recall the role of the media in the implementation of the vision of Burundi 2040-2060, and invites media managers to take ownership of this vision and thus initiate programs that accompany this vision.

During this meeting, media officials insisted on the need for certain media to report that respond to the concerns of the population and avoid inflammatory messages. They recommended journalism for development and avoiding developing only the negative aspects.

For the proper functioning of the profession of journalism, the members of the CNC recommended that journalists demonstrate humility when collecting information. They also invited resource people to deliver information to the media for the interest of the population.

With the multiplicity of media, media managers have been invited to develop solution journalism and journalism for development instead of focusing only on subjects that do not respond to the concerns of the population.

At the request of media officials for a code of conduct during the electoral period, members of the CNC recommended the strengthening of self-regulation by the Burundian Press Observatory during this period.
