With the screening of Gabriele Salvatores’ film “The Return of Casanova”, (Il ritorno di Casanova, 2023, 90′), the tribute to the new Italian cinema, presented by the Vice-Mayor of Culture of the Municipality of Ioannito and the Italian Educational Institute of Athens, continues.
Leo Bernardi is a successful and acclaimed Italian director. He is nearing the end of his career but cannot accept his slow decline. He has just finished shooting his latest film, which is inspired by the novel about Casanova, written by Arthur Schnitzler, a character so similar to the director, even more than he could have imagined. Schnitzler’s Casanova is getting old, his glory days are over: he’s lost his charm and attraction to women, he’s broke and doesn’t want to travel Europe anymore. After a long exile, he just wants to return to Venice, his hometown.
“The Return of Casanova” by Oscar-winner Gabriele Salvatores (La Grande Bellezza) offers a slick but entertainingly relentless tour of time on multiple levels and the eternal dipoles of youth – old age, past – present. With Tony Servillo, Bianca Panconi.
The screening will take place on Monday, August 26, at 9 p.m., in the courtyard of the Cultural Center “D. Hadji”. Entrance is free.
