Mumbai: Former Indian cricket team captain Nari Contractor has been living with a metal layer on his skull for 60 years. It was removed yesterday at a hospital in Mumbai. The 88-year-old is recovering.

In March 1962, during a tour of the West Indies, a contractor was killed by a bouncer in the head. He had to undergo two surgeries due to a blood clot in his brain. Then there is a layer of metal on the skull. The contractor’s career ended with that incident.

The tragedy occurred during the tour match against Barbados after the first two Tests. The innings was opened by the contractor with Dilip Sardesai. As he was scoring two runs, a fast bowler named Charlie Griffith hit the back of the head. He was not wearing a helmet. The contractor later said he did not pay enough attention to the ball. The ball was seen only inches before it hit the head. West Indies captain Frank Worrell, Indian players Chandu Borde and Pauly Umrigar donated blood to the contractor.

Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi led India in the third Test. The contractor played 31 Tests for India and scored 1611 runs. He scored a century and 11 fifties.
