The book ‘Irunberri, 1990: Arroilaren negra’ has been presented by Erein publishing house this Friday in order to offer an “alternative to the official version” of the events that took place in Irunberri in June 1990 and to “get as close as possible to the truth”. Pako Aristi wrote the text and gave twelve reasons, proofs and arguments in the presentation of the “official version” presented by the Spanish Interior Minister Jose Luis Corcuera in the Congress, that is, Jon Lizarralde, Susana Arregi and German Rubenach of ETA, who formed the Navarre command after a shootout with the Civil Guard. to disprove that the militants committed suicide.

Four days after the incident of Irunberri, the interior minister Jose Luis Corcuera read nine folios in 27 minutes “to establish the official version until today” and the author of the book wanted to respond with the same model in the appearance, reading nine pages that summarize the thesis in the mentioned time period. “Next to the official version, we want to establish an alternative to find out the truth. I think we’ve come pretty close, because Corcuera’s text is pure fiction.’ However, Aristi has left the last word to the historians. “We want to have both sources of information, they will decide what conclusions to draw when writing about this case.”

Aristi has highlighted three of the twelve reasons. On the one hand, the Dutch journalist Marian Husken changed the statement in the book published in 2018 and this would demonstrate that “from the first minute the police know where the three accomplices are”. After that, he confirmed in a letter to the research team that he had seen German running. Furthermore, this testimony places the agents “rifle on their shoulders” “shooting the militants”.

German’s is the second key. The supposed wound on his knee, specifically, because according to Husken’s testimony he was not injured in the shooting. “If German ran and hid, who shot him in the right knee when they found him at sunset?” the book asks. It should have been in the afternoon, according to the research team’s hypothesis.

The third and final main reason is the gun of Jon Lizarralde et al. According to the ballistics mentioned in the summary, the three bullets found in the bodies of Hervas and Piris are from his gun, but when the gun is found, only one bullet is missing. “It has been manipulated, someone has uploaded it afterwards”, argues Aristi in the text.

Collective process

Uxue Razquin, the editor of Erein publishing house, stated that the questions and suspicions raised on the table about the case when receiving the proposal were “very interesting”, as the members of the research team offer new information after analyzing the summary and browsing the newspapers of the time. “It’s fast-paced, it reads like a novel, but at the same time it gives you time to carefully analyze all the events”, summarizes Razquin. Along with Aristi and Razquin, Pilar Garaialde, member of the Egiari Zor foundation, was present at the presentation; and Ander Lizarralde, member of the Gure Bazterrak association in Oñati.

The latter initiated the project of the book presented this Friday “because we never believed the official version”, as Lizarrald explained. However, seeing that it was going beyond their capabilities, they met with Pako Aristi to present the proposal. After fifteen days, the writers of Urrestila gave their approval and they expressed their satisfaction and pride with the result. “The research has managed to exceed all our expectations.” And in the agreement, Aristi clearly wanted to leave this collective. “Many people have been helping. They have gathered a lot of information and put it on the table for me.”

In addition to that, he also thanked the help he received in responding to the challenges and difficulties that arose during the making of the book. In fact, ‘Irunberri, 1990: Arroilaren negra’ has more than eighty elements, including drawings or newspaper headlines or photographs of the time, and various informative sources, such as media texts, interviews with witnesses or texts that appear in the summary. “Each one has a distinctive typeface, which complicated the layout, and Asier Beltza has done the job of organizing everything into sections,” explains Aristi.
