Kochi: The High Court has banned the overtaking of private buses by honking their horns in the city limits. The court issued the order today, saying the road was full of buses running and autorickshaws violating the law. The court directed the Ernakulam City Police Commissioner and the Department of Motor Vehicles to issue an immediate order against the violators.

The court noted that traffic jams were noticed due to private buses plying the road. It is also mandatory to drive only on the left side. It has been clarified that overtaking is not allowed within the city limits and the horn is not sounding. Autorickshaws can only pick up people from designated areas. It is an offense to stop and pick up and drop off passengers.

The court noted that violations, including driving autorickshaws without looking at or giving signals, were being noticed and were violating the limits. The High Court has directed the Department of Motor Vehicles and the police to issue an order while considering a group of petitions related to autorickshaw permits in the Perumbavoor city limits.
