When fjord ice ends up in cocktail glasses in the middle of the desert… The Greenlandic start-up, Arctic Ice, intends to contribute to the economic development of Greenland, by shipping thousand-year-old ice from its fjords to bars from Dubai. To satisfy customers, the ice cubes produced by the start-up then undertake a journey of no less than 30,000 kilometers, crossing the seas in 19 days, as reported by Guardian.

Since its inception in 2022, Arctic Ice claims to have shipped 20 tons of ice directly to cocktail bars in the Middle East. The ice, collected from Nuup Kangerlua, a fjord near the capital, Nuuk, using a ship equipped with a crane, is said to have extraordinary properties.

The “Cleanest H2O on Earth”

Coming from the bottom of the sea, where it has been compressed over the centuries, it would offer greater purity than mineral water, according to Malik V. Rasmussen, co-founder of Arctic Ice. The entrepreneur even assures that this Arctic ice, from glaciers frozen for more than 100,000 years, is the “cleanest H2O on Earth”, because it has not been in contact with any soil contaminated by pollutants. Furthermore, it would melt more slowly than ordinary ice cubes.

The start-up faces virulent criticism on social networks, accused in particular of worsening climate change. Malik V. Rasmussen says he supports Greenland by diversifying the activities of the country, which traditionally lives from tourism and fishing, and which is largely dependent on Denmark financially.
