The Korean Film Council has issued a warning regarding the movie “Despicable Me 4” (pictured), which has been embroiled in controversy over its “irregular release” by holding a large-scale paid preview screening before its release. The Special Committee for Creating a Fair Environment under the Korean Film Council issued a statement on the 2nd, stating, “We express strong regret for the irregular release that has undermined the fair order of the movie screening market.”

According to the Korean Film Council, “Despicable Me 4” was screened a total of 5,090 times in theaters as paid previews over the weekend of the 20th and 21st of last month, securing 768,009 seats. During this period, the number of paid previews for “Despicable Me 4” accounted for 12.1% of all theaters in the country. However, the average seat sales rate was only 13.5% (103,528 viewers). The Korean Film Council pointed out that “the irregular release resulted in 664,481 empty seats, taking away screening opportunities and seats for 147 movies on the 20th and 144 movies on the 21st, disrupting fair market order.”

The KOFIC continued, “Last year, the government, KOFIC, and the screening, investment, and distribution industries formed the ‘Korean Film Re-leap Policy Working Group’ and the ‘Korean Film Industry Crisis Overcoming Policy Council’ to work to overcome the film industry crisis following the pandemic,” and criticized, “The irregular release under the pretext of a paid preview is the result of pouring cold water on the joint efforts of the government and the film industry.”
