(ANSA) – ROME, APRIL 22 – While the Scurati case still holds sway, another blow falls on Rai and involves Marco Liorni, face of Rai1, at the helm of the game show L’Eredità. The focus is on a phrase uttered by the host on gold to the homeland of the fascist regime, during yesterday’s episode. One question asked in which year “Italian spouses deliver their wedding rings to their homeland in exchange for worthless rings”, i.e. 1935 with the aim of financing the war in Ethiopia. “Just think – commented the host – so many families have made this truly patriotic gesture, that of donating their wedding ring to their homeland with a receipt and a ring of no value”. His phrase sparked controversy, starting on social media. Liorni, however, with a video just posted on Instagram, returned the accusations to the sender. “I wanted to say to those who thought I was praising fascism and to the internet thugs that I am anti-fascist and I could never praise fascism, it just wouldn’t come to me. In the game of Inheritance I try through small things to go back to a certain historical moment. I’m sorry for those who interpreted it differently, I should have been more clear. I think we all need to calm down, discussing more constructive issues and in a more civil way.” And he explains further: “They were days of great suffering, taking off your gold wedding ring to put on an iron one in that Italy was a painful gesture but also a gesture of patriotism: this is what my grandparents and my father, this is what History says seen with the spirit of the times, not with the eyes of today”.
