In response to the controversy over nailing the Mandaeru of Byeongsan Seowon during the filming of the KBS drama, Professor Seo Gyeong-deok of Sungshin Women’s University called for improvement in civic awareness.
Professor Seo said on his Instagram account on the 3rd, “An architect who visited the site raised the issue, and many netizens reported it, so I found out about it.” He added, “Damage to cultural assets has been serious in Korea in recent years.” pointed out.
Recently, controversy arose after the KBS drama production team hammered nails into the pillars of the building to install props at Byeongsan Seowon, a UNESCO World Heritage site.
It was revealed that the production team of KBS’s new drama ‘I Took Namjoo’s First Night’ hammered nails all over Byeongsan Seowon in Andong to film the drama.
In response to this, KBS made an official apology the day before and announced that they were discussing the best way to recover.
Professor Seo pointed out, “Egregious incidents have continued to occur, such as the damage to the Seolleung Tomb, a UNESCO heritage site, in August of last year, and the graffiti attack on the wall of Gyeongbokgung Palace two years ago.”
“Now, we must not end with simple punishment, but we must improve ‘citizen awareness’ regarding the importance of cultural properties,” he said. “To achieve this, above all, we need to strengthen cultural property-related education starting from elementary school.”
“Due to the spread of K content around the world, many overseas tourists are flocking to experience Korean culture and history,” he said. “In this situation, we ourselves must first do our best to save and preserve cultural assets.”
