Global camping supplies company ‘Polar Stuff’ recently caused great controversy by using the Rising Sun flag symbol on its website, but changed its design due to protests from domestic netizens.

Seo Gyeong-deok, a professor at Sungshin Women’s University, explained on the 17th, “I found out about it because many netizens reported it, and when I checked, I found out that they were showing the ‘Japanese Collection’ and using the Rising Sun flag symbol.”

Numerous domestic netizens complained to the company about this, and the company later responded with an apology and replaced it with a different design that removed the Rising Sun flag symbol.

Professor Seo said, “In the past, we mainly reported reports, but recently, the number of netizens who complained directly to the company has increased, and the results have improved.”

Last August, British pop star Adele caused great controversy when she featured the Japanese Rising Sun flag in a video at a concert in Germany, and the Rising Sun flag was removed due to protests from Professor Seo and netizens.

A Korean living in Canada protested to the company after confirming that a famous beer company in Vancouver had used the Rising Sun flag pattern on the cover of a newly released beer and changed the design.

Additionally, the news that a Korean in his 50s removed the Rising Sun flag hanging at the Uyuni Salt Flats in Bolivia, a world-class tourist destination while traveling in South America, became a hot topic online.

Professor Seo said, “For the past 10 years, we have consistently carried out the ‘Worldwide Rising Sun Flag Eradication Campaign’ with netizens and achieved many results,” and added, “Next year, we plan to create a casebook on removing the Rising Sun Flag.”
