The civic group Candlelight Victory Transition Action (Candlelight Action) held an ‘Impeachment Night’ event at the National Assembly Hall on the 27th and continued to speak out about impeaching President Yoon within the year. At the event that Rep. Kang also attended, Kim Min-woong, standing representative of the Candlelight Movement, said, “It is a very important achievement that the impeachment situation has been created,” and “We can now call for impeachment in the National Assembly.”
Strong criticism continued from the People Power Party. CEO Han Dong-hoon met with reporters in Busan on the 28th and criticized the incident, saying it was “extremely regrettable.” Rep. Kim Ki-hyun also said on the 29th, “I am appalled by the behavior of Democratic Party members of the National Assembly who are acting as ‘pawns of impeachment agitation’ and degrading the National Assembly, the hall of popular opinion, into an ‘exorcism for impeachment.’” In a commentary, Spokesperson Kim Yeon-joo called for Rep. Kang’s expulsion, saying, “The unconstitutional and illegal incitement to impeachment is an act of disorderly conduct that disturbs the order of the country and undermines democratic legitimacy.”
Rep. Kang also held a counter-press conference that day and said, “I will throw my body to stand against the illegality of the Yoon Seok-yeol administration and achieve its impeachment.” He said, “The President and the People Power Party are trampling on the freedom of press and assembly guaranteed by the Constitution and the authority of the National Assembly members who represent the people with a coup-like idea.” ) It is a declaration of war against the people.”
As the controversy intensified, Democratic Party leaders drew a line. Kim Yun-deok, secretary-general of the Democratic Party, said at a press conference that day, “It is an individual action of a member of the National Assembly,” and added, “We will respond at the party level to prevent misunderstandings that it is the party’s position.”
