Homeless shelter proposal hits roadblock

The Dakota County Board of Commissioners meeting on Tuesday evening was filled to capacity, with concerned citizens voicing their opposition to the potential conversion of Norwood Inn and Suites in Eagan into a homeless shelter. One neighboring business owner, David Ansari of Ansari’s Mediterranean Grill & Lounge, expressed his apprehension about the project, citing a recent increase in crime and drug activity in the area.

Ansari stated, “If you guys are going to bring in a homeless shelter, we just feel like this is going to be doubling down on what’s already happening there.”

In response to these safety concerns, county officials assured the community that the proposed shelter would have 24/7 security and would operate as a referral-based facility rather than a drop-in center. They also clarified that only 55 units would be used to house individuals in need.

Despite these assurances, the county faced resistance when considering whether to apply for a $10 million grant towards the estimated $24 million cost of the project. At the conclusion of the meeting, all five commissioners voted against moving forward with the proposal, citing a sense of urgency and a lack of support from the community.

Commissioner Liz Workman expressed her non-support for the location, stating, “I’ve never been supportive of this location, I am supportive of finding a shelter.”

Commissioner Mike Slavik emphasized the importance of community engagement, adding, “I would rather have this room full of allies than go in with an ‘us against them’ and rush.”

The decision to halt the homeless shelter proposal comes as a disappointment to those advocating for increased support and resources for the homeless population in Dakota County. However, it also serves as a reminder of the importance of considering community concerns and engaging in thorough planning when undertaking such initiatives.
