For residents of one of the districts of Barcelona, the Cool Walks application has been released, which calculates the route taking into account the sunlight hitting it. Users can choose the straightest route, the longer shady route, or turn on “vampire mode”, which will exclude exposure to the sun as much as possible.
The developers aim to protect residents from extreme heat. The app uses Lidar technology to create terrain with an accuracy of 10 cm. Combined with data on the movement of the sun, this helps to determine where the shadow will be at a given time of day. The application currently works only in one of the districts of Barcelona, but the creators plan to expand the geography: according to the city plan for the next 20 years, the Barcelona authorities plan to increase the coverage of the city covered with trees from 25% to 30%.
